View this email in your browser 6th International Conference on Community Psychology Global Dialogues on Critical Knowledges, Liberation and Community 27-30 May 2016 International Convention Centre, Durban, South Africa   FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT!  The University of South Africa, the South African Medical Research Council, and the Psychological Society of South Africa are pleased to release the First Announcement of the 6thInternational Conference on Community Psychology (ICCP2016). ICCP2016 will be held at the International Convention Centre, Durban, South Africa, 27-30 May 2016. The theme of the conference is Global Dialogues on Critical Knowledges, Liberation and Community. The conference theme seeks to accord representation, voice and space to theories and enactments of community psychology that contribute to robust debate and conversations about the identity and representational forms of community psychology, the critical roles of community psychologists, and the epistemological and ontological diversity present in global enactments of community psychology. As such, the conference aims to stimulate global dialogues that seek to disrupt hegemonic influences, call into question that which is construed as critical knowledges, and reflect on the meanings of liberation and community. The conference programme will consist of keynote addresses; oral and poster presentations; symposia; thematic panels; roundtable discussions; innovative presentations; social events; cultural activities; and the opportunity to engage with exhibitors.   We invite you to submit an abstract for presentation at ICCP2016. Invitation to participate in a symposium on community engagement initiatives at the upcoming PsySSA Congress

Dear Colleagues,

The Community and Social Psychology Division of PsySSA invites you to participate in a symposium on community engagement initiatives at the PsySSA Congress that will take place from 15 to 18 September 2015 at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg. We know that there are many noteworthy community engagement projects in various parts and regions of the country, managed by psychologists and psychology practitioners. We also know that many psychologists who primarily identify with other Divisions of PsySSA also engage in very important community work. In an attempt to draw on and share some of the abundance of this important work, we would like to invite you to present a paper on your project or a paper raising debates about "community" and community engagement in psychology to be included in the symposium.

Should you be interested to participate in the symposium, please send a title of your presentation, with an abstract of 250 words and a list of keywords to the coordinator of the symposium, Prof Ronelle Carolissen, at rlc2@sun.ac.za. The abstract submission closes in two days’ time, so your speedy response will be appreciated!

Invitation to participate in a series of symposia during the upcoming PsySSA Congress

Dear Colleagues

As you may already be aware, the annual PsySSA Congress is being held at Emperor’s palace from the 15-18 September 2015. I am putting togethersome symposia with a few colleagues from the PsySSA Division of Research Methodology.

I am writing to you to see if you or anyone in your unit would like to contribute papers to any of the symposia listed below at the PsySSA Congress. Please note that you are welcome to put together your own symposia or presentations and submit online at www.psyssa.com. PsySSA would also like to encourage symposia and presentations that have a practice and practitioner focus rather than being a solely academic/research focus. We would also be willing to extend symposia over two or three sessions like for example in the psychological assessment theme if there were more than the 6 papers for a symposium.

Symposium 1: Research in Practice (Dr. Vanessa Scherman to convene) Paper 1: Implications of the new assessment legislation for private practitioners Paper 2: Capturing test data in private practice - managing test data, ethical issues included Paper 3 - Evaluation criteria for test selection – what private practitioners need to know Paper 4 - Publishing and presenting client data: the ethical and practical issues Paper 5 - Paper 6 - Paper 7-

Symposium 2 and maybe 3 (could be over two or more conference slots): Instrument development and adaptation in South Africa (Prof Sumaya Laher to convene) Paper 1 - Presentation on instrument to measure bullying Paper 2 - Developing an instrument to measure Anorexia nervosa in men Paper 3 - Using ECD ECERS and ITERS on SA children Paper 4 - Paper 5 - Paper 6 - Paper 7 - 

Symposium 3 and maybe 4 on Social media and/or Technology in Psychology (we are thinking on splitting these into two foci - technology in psychology and social media research in psychology) Paper 1 - The digital divide in South Africa – Implications for Psychology – Sumaya Laher Paper 2 – Using social media for research - practicalities and ethics (Lynn Hendriks and/or Sherianne Kramer - might move to Symposium 3) Paper 3 - Understanding learner attitudes towards Ipads/Tablets in blended learning environments – Sam Hart, Emma Boshoff and Sumaya Laher Paper 4 - Exploring computer attitudes, learning styles and learner motivation as predictors of learner achievement – Emma Boshoff, Sam Hart and Sumaya Laher Paper 5 - Effects of E-technology on therapeutic relationships – R.Klette Paper 6 - this is the least developed of the symposia but if you have something on computerized assessment it might fit in here Paper 6 - Paper 7 -

Please can you let me know as soon as possible if any of you would be interested in presenting and for which symposia. If you would like to join any of the symposia, I would need the abstracts submitted to me by the 10 April. Regretfully this is not a funded information. Colleagues will attend and pay for the conference themselves

21st South African Psychology Congress

The 21st Annual South African Psychology Congress, with the theme Strength in Unity, to be held in Johannesburg 15 -18 September 2015 focuses on the strength of Psychology uniting within the discipline, and its capacity to forge greater unity in the nation, and beyond. The launch of the Pan-African Psychology Union last year and the highly successful hosting of the International Congress of Psychology (ICP 2012) are examples of PsySSA’s global record of uniting in the face of health, social and humanitarian challenges. To this end PsySSA continues to engage colleagues and organisations in efforts to broaden the horizons for Psychology as a discipline and especially the communities being served. In the context of furthering development in South African Psychology and ensuring the inclusion of a wide range of voices, presentations, scholarly and practice-oriented perspectives, the Congress Committee invites you to submit contributions for the 2015 congress. It is hoped that the congress will showcase a broad range of scholarly research and reviews that reflect Psychology as science, profession and practice.

Time to end extreme inequality. A Perspective from the BRICS

This year the World Social Science Forum will be taking place in Durban under the theme "Transforming global relations for a just world". The Forum focus on a range of issues pertaining to global inequalities as they relate to governance, healthcare and education, climate change and adaptation, patterns of production and consumption, and human rights and social justice.

Following on this theme the HSRC’s BRICS Research Centre has invited Oxfam to present the findings of their recently published report entitled ‘In Even it Up: Time to end extreme inequality’. Drawing on case studies from around the world the report demonstrates the impact that rising inequality is having on rich and poor countries alike and explores the different ways that people and governments are responding to it.

While focusing on inequality trends on a global level the presenter will frame the analysis within a BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) context. The BRICS countries present interesting cases as they continue to have growing influence in the global economy while facing challenges in reducing inequality but have been at the cutting edge of a range of successful and groundbreaking pro poor policies.

Pooven Moodley is currently Associate Country Director for Oxfam in South Africa, having previously worked with Oxfam International on Development Financing issues at the Pan Africa level. He is a Human Rights lawyer and an advocate of issues affecting the poor, having started his campaigning at a very young age during the struggle against apartheid in South Africa and taking on pro bono precedent setting human rights cases.

He has worked for and also consulted for leading international agencies including Johns Hopkins University, Oxfam, UNDP, Futures Group, The Policy Project and the Research Triangle Institute. As the first HIV/AIDS Parliamentary Lobbyist on the continent he has worked extensively with Governments, Parliaments and Civil Society across Africa influencing and developing policy. He has played a role in influencing international structures such as the World Economic Forum, G8, G20, BRICS and UN General Assembly.
